The Power of Moments: Why Giving Your Children Memories Is More Important Than Gifts

By Derrick Weeks

As parents, we all want the best for our children. We want them to have everything they need to succeed in life, and we often equate that with material possessions. But as we reflect on our own childhoods, we realize that it’s not the things we received that we cherish the most, but the moments we shared with our parents.

In his book, “The Power of Moments,” Chip Heath emphasizes the importance of creating meaningful experiences for others. This concept applies not only to our interactions with others but also to our relationships with our children.

Think back to your childhood. What moments do you remember the most? Was it the toys you received on your birthday or the times you spent with your parents? Chances are, it was the latter – the moments when your parents cooked breakfast for you, imparted their wisdom, or spent time with you.

As dads, we are responsible for giving our children more than just material possessions. We need to provide them with memories. Memories that they will cherish for a lifetime. And the best way to do that is by being intentional about the moments we create with them.

It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget to make time for our children. But the reality is that time is the most precious gift we can give them. Take the time to cook breakfast with your child on a lazy Saturday morning. Attend a baseball game together or have a movie night at home. These small moments will have a lasting impact on your child’s life.

Moreover, we should also focus on imparting wisdom to our children. Our children need more than just material possessions; they need guidance and direction in life. Take the time to talk to your child about their dreams and aspirations. Find their God-given gifts and cultivate them. Share your own experiences and the lessons you have learned. Show through your actions what it looks like to live a godly and just life.

As fathers, we have the power to create lasting memories and shape our children’s lives in meaningful ways. While material possessions may bring temporary joy, the moments we share with our children matter. Let’s consciously give our children the gift of our time, attention, and love. By doing so, we will create cherished memories and instill in them the values and lessons that will guide them for a lifetime. Let’s be intentional about the moments we make and the legacy we leave for our children.
